Among TV shows released on DVD this week is the concluding season of a vintage classic.
"Hawaii Five-0: the Twelfth and Final Season" (CBS/Paramount, 1979-80, five discs, $54.99). Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett loses his partner "Danno" (James MacArthur) for Season 12 of this action show set and filmed in Hawaii. But he still manages to take down bank robbers, gold smugglers and mainland mobsters. And this series-ending blast from the past saves the best for last as McGarret takes on his arch-nemesis Wo Fat one final time.
Khigh Dhiegh made his first appearance as Chinese bad guy Wo Fat in the show's pilot and then reappeared periodically over the series' run (15 times in all). But after battling McGarret in Season 9, Wo Fat was missing from Seasons 10 and 11. But the last show of the series carries the telling title: "Woe to Wo Fat."
And look for very young Jeff Daniels and Kelly Preston, as well as such veterans as Jayne Meadows and John Ireland in guest appearances.
Extras full frame, 19 episodes, featurette, promo, music video
"Dennis the Menace: The Final Season" (Shout! 1962-63, b/w, five discs, $29.93). This popular family sitcom is, of course, based on the long-running comic strip (which still appears daily in the Deseret News). And as fans know, toward the end of Season 3, the actor who played Mr. Wilson, Joseph Kearns, passed away.
So Gale Gordon, that master of exasperation whose vast experience includes frustration with Eve Arden on "Our Miss Brooks" and Lucille Ball on all of her shows, took over as Mr. Wilson's brother — a role he continued for this fourth and final season.
The series' cancellation, however, had more to do with star Jay North outgrowing the character of precocious Dennis.
Extras full frame, 38 episodes
"King Arthur and Medieval Britain" (History, 2011, two discs, $19.95). Five specials delve into the subject of Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin, Lancelot, Excalibur, the Knights of the Round Table and Camelot, exploring the stories that have taken their rightful place in beloved mythology.
Extras widescreen, five episodes
"Frozen World: The Story of the Ice Age" (History, 2011, two discs, $19.95). Four specials on the title subject are collected here, comparing Neanderthals with Cro-Magnons during an Ice Age winter, the impact of a volcanic eruption 75,000 years ago and whether another Ice Age could be happen today.
Extras widescreen, four episodes
"The Penguins of Madagascar: Operation: Blowhole" (Dreamworks, 2010/11, $14.99). Neil Patrick Harris provides the voice of Dr. Blowhole in these episodes from the "Penguins of Madagascar" cartoon TV series, a spinoff of the "Madagascar" movies.
