Virginia Belle Steggell Howell Ivie1929 ~ 2012Virginia Belle Steggell Howell Ivie, 83, passed away in the loving embrace of her family on January 8, 2012.Virginia was born on January 6, 1929 in American Fork, Utah to Lewis Johnathan Steggell and Isabelle Jeanette Proctor. She grew up on the family farm. Her grandmother taught her to bake and her mother taught her to sew, skills she made use of and enjoyed throughout her life. She also loved gardening, particularly roses.She married Oliver Howell on January 6, 1948 in Portland, Oregon with whom she had a son, Randolph Oliver Howell on July 15, 1948. Following their divorce, she returned to Utah with her son where she ran a successful housekeeping business. She later worked for the Utah State Training Home for 30 years. Her diligence and independence were remarkable. Despite considerable struggles, she supported her son and managed to purchase a home on her own in a time when that was unusual for a single woman. She married Watson Ivie on July 29, 1963. They cared for each other for 46 years until his death in March, 2010.She will be best remembered as a dedicated mother, wife and grandmother. She was a strong, independent woman who overcame great difficulties and worked very hard throughout her life. Her last words of advice to her family were to not stay closed up inside four walls, but to live each day as if it matters. Virginia is preceded in death by her husband, Watson Ivie, and her brothers, Clifford Steggell and Eugene Steggell. She is survived by her brother, George Steggell (Marilyn) and sister, Margaret Steggell, her son Randolph Howell (Carol) as well as four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who will greatly miss her generosity and fierce spirit. Her family would like to thank the staff members of the Beehive Home of West Jordan and the CVICU at Jordan Valley Hospital for their tender care in Virginia's last days. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Anderson and Sons Mortuary Chapel, 49 East 100 North in American Fork. Friends may call an hour prior to services.
