GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida has hired Boise State's Brent Pease as its offensive coordinator, said a person familiar with the search.
The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on condition of anonymity because an official announcement is scheduled for Wednesday.
Pease has agreed to a three-year deal worth a little more than $500,000, the person said, on par with what other play-callers are making in the Southeastern Conference Pease replaces Charlie Weis, who left last month to take the head job at Kansas.
The Gators met with Pease last Friday, and the interview seemingly went so well that Pease cancelled an interview with national champion Alabama. The Crimson Tide is looking for a coordinator to replace Jim McElwain, who is leaving to take the head job at Colorado State.
The 47-year-old Pease spent the last six years at Boise State. He left briefly following the 2010 season to become Indiana's offensive coordinator but returned a short time later to take the same job with the Broncos.
Pease served as Boise State's receivers coach from 2006 through 2010. Before that, he was offensive coordinator at Baylor (2003-05) and Kentucky (2001-02). He also spent time at Football Championship Subdivision schools Montana (1991-98) and Northern Arizona (1999-2000).
He has eight years of experience as a play-caller, including two in the SEC.
Boise State ranked ninth in the nation in total offense this season, averaging 481 yards a game.
Florida was 102nd, averaging 334 yards a game. Coach Will Muschamp hired Weis to improve the offense, but the Gators totaled fewer yards and points in 2011 than they did in 2010.
Muschamp interviewed Jacksonville University coach Kerwin Bell for the offensive coordinator job last month. He also was considering running backs coach Brian White, who called plays in Florida's win against Ohio State in Gator Bowl. Florida's offense managed 263 yards and scored 10 points against the Buckeyes. The Gators scored twice on special teams in the 24-17 victory.
White has said he would remain at Florida if passed over for the coordinator
