Shawn Western, Olympus, boys swimming: Western has been nothing short of amazing ever since he dived into the pool for Olympus. He is the defending state champion in the 500 freestyle.
This year Shawn owns the fastest time in the state in the 500 freestyle and has the fastest 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke times in 4A.
Western has committed to swim collegiately at BYU next year.
"He is a great student, he has great body for swimming, he is smart, and he loves swimming, but the thing that I think sets him apart is his work ethic," said Olympus coach Bladley Goffe. "He is one of the hardest working swimmers I have ever worked with. He will finish a set that other good swimmers will attempt and quit, and you can tell that it was hard even for him, and then he will still ask for more."
Amber Daly, Layton, girls basketball: Amber Daly isn't just one of Layton High's best basketball players. She's one of the team's most enthusiastic cheerleaders.
"She cheers for everyone on and off the court," said Layton head coach Van Price. "In conditioning drills, she finishes her own workout and then goes back and runs with anyone who is slower or who hasn't finished yet and runs with them encouraging them to keep going and to finish strong. She supports and motivates anyone who is struggling in a game or who hasn't performed up to par. She always thinks of others."
An honor student who maintains a 3.7 GPA, Daly averages 9.8 points, four assists and three steals. She also led the team's efforts to raise money for children treated by Primary Children's.
