JUSTIN JOHNSON, Green River, boys basketball: This senior big man is scoring points at an unbelievable rate so far this year. Through five games he's averaging 35.6 ppg.
In three games last week, including two at the Sevier Valley Center, he scored 37, 23 and 40 points.
On Wednesday he scored 40 points in leading Green River to a 67-65 road victory over Grand. On Friday he scored 23 points in the Pirates' 42-38 loss to Manila, adn then on Saturday he scored 37 points in a 52-36 win over Milford.
Johnson has been a three-year star for Green River. He averaged 21.0 ppg as a junior and 14.4 ppg as a sophomore.
He was recently named to the Deseret News 1A all-state baseball team as well.
JILLIAN POWELL, Bingham, girls basketball: Jillian Powell took natural ability and put it to good use with a lot of hard work.
"Without her, we'd be in trouble," said Bingham head coach Rand Rasmussen. "In the game against Cyprus, she had a key steal and then hit back-to-back 3s. She also ended up guarding their point guard. She's versatile that way."
Powell's strength may be her ability to do whatever it is the Miner's need most. The junior honor student was elected team captain and works hard to earn the confidence of her teammates. Her leadership has helped the team to a 5-0 start and a No. 2 ranking.
"She has to guard a lot of post players," said Rasmussen. "But she can also drive to the hole. She has all parts of the game."
