Nadene Johnson Gatrell1925 ~ 2011Nadene Johnson Gatrell passed away Thursday, December 29. Nadene was born March 3, 1925, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Arthur Edward "Tory" Johnson and Hermoine Groo Johnson. Raised in Conda, Idaho, Nadene remained a proud daughter of Idaho her entire life. She attended Soda Springs High School and the University of Utah.In fall 1946, Nadene met Gordon G. Gatrell on a blind date; they were married at Memory Grove's Memorial House on December 5, 1947, in a ceremony broadcast on KDYL radio. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Nadene's faith, in both her family and her beliefs, was unparalleled and unwavering. She consistently saw the best in everyone around her, and never gave up on anyone. Throughout her life, Nadene proudly served in a variety of church callings, including two local service missions with Gordon.In addition to her faith and her family, Nadene was passionate about genealogy and the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, health foods and vitamins, and especially BYU football. She also enjoyed word puzzles and games, and she was often the unexpected source of a witty one-liner or quick quip.Known for her generosity of both time and money, Nadene sponsored numerous children in foreign nations and spent hours each week providing service locally to those in need. From driving older neighbors around town, to baking and delivering countless pans of brownies, Nadene was always there to help. Her brownie recipe became legendary and was eventually the basis for a successful commercial product. Nadene is survived by her husband of 64 years, Gordon; seven of their eight children, Jan (Rod) Rupp, Scott (Jan), Alan, Lois (Gail) Paxton, Cory (Debi), Linda (Rob) Wernli, and Terri (Jeff) Shaw; 21 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her oldest son, Steven.Nadene's family is grateful for the love and care shown her by John Nelson, the staff of Mount Olympus Rehabilitation Center, and Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 5, at Noon at the Garden Heights Ward, 2220 East Fisher Lane (2935 South); friends may visit with the family that morning from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M.
