Richard Caryl Haskins, DDS, MSD 1926 ~ 2011Comment on this story
A loving husband, father and grandfather passed away of natural causes on August 11, 2011.He was born in Logan, Utah on October 31, 1926 to Dr. Clark and Kate Thomas Haskins. Richard enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He attended Utah State University, Northwestern University, College of Physicians and Surgeons (in San Francisco) and the University of Nebraska. Richard married Joan Poulter Horsley in 1947. He practiced and taught pediatric dentistry in Salt Lake City for over 50 years. When he began his pediatric dentistry practice, there were less than 30 people in the country with his background and degree. He was instrumental in developing the Pediatric Dental Residency at Primary Children's Medical Center from 1973 to 1991 and the Cranio Facial Center from 1983 to 1997. His expertise that he shared with his residence has had a far reaching impact. He also held numerous elected and appointed offices in the dental profession, both locally and nationally, including serving as a Diplomat and Chairman of The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Richard was also involved in a variety of pediatric dental societies and helped advance the discipline through his academic work including published scientific articles. Richard enjoyed exercising, sailing, boating, travel, geography, jewelry making and most of all his family. He was well known for his kind heart, sense of humor, and good nature. He was a member of the LDS Church. He and his dear wife Joan just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. He and Joan also volunteered at the VA Medical Center LDS branch. Richard is survived by his wife Joan, children: Neal (Cindy) Haskins, Rick Haskins, Cathy Haskins, Gena (Steve) Alder and his seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
