Raymond Winslow Smith 1933 ~ 2011

Raymond Winslow Smith, age 77, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away on April 18, 2011 of natural causes.Ray was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 22, 1933 to Joseph Bailey Smith and Martha Frieda Heidel Smith. He was the great-grandson of Samuel Harrison Smith, first missionary of the LDS Church and was proud of his heritage. He served as a medical corpsman in the Korean War. He served an LDS mission to Germany, the homeland of his mother. He graduated from Fresno City College. He was a long-haul truck driver for Garrett Freight Lines for many years and retired from ANR Freight. He cherished his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He had a soft spot in his heart for cats and loved working with his hands. He was a skilled mechanic. Survived by his wife, V. Ruth Versluis Smith, whom he loved dearly; seven children, Lt. Col. Kenneth R. (Clarissa) Smith, Oman; Clifford Smith, Salt Lake City; Timothy (Luanne) Smith, South Jordan; Jill (Robert) Murdock, Colorado; Kenneth H. (Lisa) Smith, Colorado; Rebecca Smith, West Jordan; Rachael (Michael) Terry, West Valley; 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; brother, Hyrum (Alina) Smith, St. George. Preceded in death by grandson, Samuel Murdock, by siblings Cumorah, Marion, Esther, and Ralph, and by dear pets Tiger and Woofie. A viewing will be held at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley (1007 West 10600 South) on Friday, April 22 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Kearns East Stake Center (4300 West 4715 South) on Saturday, April 23 at 11:00 with a viewing from 9:30-10:30 prior to the service. Interment at Redwood Memorial Park (6500 South Redwood Road). The family wishes to thank IHC Hospice Services for their tender and loving care.
