CEDAR CITY, Utah — Outstanding high school students from southwest Utah were recognized during the Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar competition held earlier this month. One hundred and seventy-nine students representing 17 high schools competed in the 33rd Annual Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar competition on the campus of Southern Utah University on April 7.

Each of the candidates were judged based on personal achievements and awards compiled in their portfolios as well as interviews with the judges. The finalists were judged on scholarship, leadership and citizenship in their respected categories.

The 15 categories of the competition included: Agricultural Science; Business and Marketing; Computer Technology; Dance; English; Family and Consumer Sciences; Foreign Language; General Scholarship; Mathematics; Music; Science; Social Science; Speech and Drama; Trade and Technical Education, and Visual Arts.

Schools represented were Beaver, Bryce Valley, Canyon View, Cedar, Dixie, Desert Hills, Enterprise, Escalante, Hurricane, Kanab, Milford, Panguitch, Parowan, Pine View, Snow Canyon, Tuacahn and Valley high schools.

Winners and runners-up were honored for their excellence in scholarship, leadership, citizenship and community service. Judges came from local communities, Dixie State College and Southern Utah University. Sixteen colleges and universities throughout the state offered opportunities for scholarships.

Ed Rogers, Dixie Applied Technology College, was Master of Ceremonies. Dakota Shirley Maxwell, Canyon View High, Ashlea Rebecca Patterson, Desert Hills High, Taylor Armstrong, Kanab High and Callen Mae Crenshaw, Snow Canyon High, provided musical numbers. The awards were presented by Superintendent Ray Terry and Nick Dotson, Beaver School District, Superintendent Maloy Dodds and Ken Platt, Garfield School District, Superintendent Robert Johnson and Lex Chamberlain, Kane School District, Superintendent Jim Johnson and Stephen Allen, Iron School District and Assistant Superintendent Marshall Topham and Laura Hesson, Washington School District.

Prior to the awards program, a banquet was held to honor the Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar finalists and their families. The southwest program is one of the five regional Sterling Scholar program that cover the state of Utah. These regional programs are patterned after, although not directly administered by, the Deseret News/ KSL 5 Television Wasatch Front program that was started in 1962 to recognize the accomplishments of high school students.

Winners and runners-up:

Agricultural Science: Winner: Angela Yardley, Beaver High, parents Gilbert and Denise Yardley. Runners-up: Brandy Holm, Cedar High, parent Loraine Holm; and Tanner K. Ence, Dixie High, parents Dan Ence and Illiona Ence.

Business & Marketing: Winner: Jennings Leavitt, Snow Canyon, parents Lemuel and Laura Leavitt. Runners-up: Trichelle Armstrong, Panguitch High, parents Tracy and Lynn Armstrong; and Jessica Dickison, Cedar High, parents Brett and Laura Dickison.

Computer Technology: Winner: Christopher Bradshaw, Desert Hills, parents Bruce and Christy Bradshaw. Runners-up: Gregory Kendall Wilkey, Pine View High, parents Rex and Sue Wilkey; and Kalin Hofheins, Beaver High, parents Kent and Kari Hofheins.

Dance: Winner: Demi Eastman, Canyon View High, parents David and Joni Eastman. Runners-up: Lacey Wilkerson, Cedar High, parents Burke and Sharon Wilkerson; and Natale McAneney, Parowan High, parents Tim and Laura McAneney.

English:Winner: Bryn Curry, Cedar High, parents Steve and Laura Curry. Runners-up: Lane Sorensen, Valley High, parents DarLynn and Arlene Sorensen; and Kathryn Anne Koeven, Pine View High, parents Gary and Cheryl Koeven.

Family & Consumer Sciences: Winner: Abigail Larsen, Cedar High, parents Ronald and Mary Beth Larsen. Runners-up: Sarah Nicole McComb, Desert Hills High, parents Jeffery McComb and Maureen Neufeld; and Caprice Christensen, Enterprise High, parents Victor and Trinilee Christensen.

Foreign Language: Winner: Stephanie Rimmasch, Pine View High, parents Alec and Teresa Rimmasch. Runners-up: Katrien Jack, Desert Hills High, parents Colin and Leslie Jack; and Tina Yakovich, Cedar High, parents John Yakovich and Kayleen Robinson.

General Scholarship: Winner: Erik Nakken, Cedar High, parents Robert and Sydney Nakken. Runners-up: Judah Evangelista, Kanab High, parents Michael Evangelista and Avery Shumway; and Peter Joseph Fuller, Snow Canyon High, parents Clayton and Marybeth Fuller.

Mathematics:Winner: Kyler Frank Brinkerhoff, Desert Hills, parents Ryan and Roshell Brinkerhoff. Runners-up: Rachel Elaine Thompson, Pine View High, parents John and Ruth Thompson; and Kathryn Petersen, Cedar High, parents James and Francine Petersen.

Music:Winner: Megumi Gass, Pine View High, parents Patrick Gass and Yoshiko Kandoni. Runners-up: Taylor Armstrong, Kanab High, parents John and Jill Armstrong; and Callen Mae Crenshaw, Snow Canyon, parents Phillip and Cinthanie Crenshaw.

Science: Winner: Hunter Schone, Pine View High, parents Steve and Deborah Schone. Runners-up: Kaitlyn Friese, Cedar High, parents Michael and Donna Friese; and Marcus Chase Halterman, Parowan High, parents Mark and Kellie Halterman.

Speech/Drama: Winner: Natalie Spangler, Tuacahn High, parents Frank and Jennifer Spangler. Runners-up: Andrew Justvig, Desert Hills, parents Stacey Justvig; and Kendra Stahl, Parowan High, parents Kenton and Sara Anne Stahl.
