Choir celebrates with Founder's Day concert
SALT LAKE CITY — The Choir of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, accompanied by the Cathedral Chamber Orchestra, will celebrate its annual Founder's Day concert at 8 p.m. Sunday, commemorating the Madeleine Choir School's first rehearsal conducted March 19, 1990.
With the concert celebrating the music of composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the program includes Mozart's "Litaieae Lauretanae," based on the 12th century Loretian Litany used to honor Mary; Bach's "Harpsicord Concerto No. 1 in D Minor," performed by organist and assistant cathedral music director Douglas O'Neill; and Bach's cantata "Christ lag in Todesbanden" ("Christ lay in the hands of death), a work presumed to be written in 1707 for Easter Sunday.
The cantata is derived from a chorale composed by Martin Luther, the melody and text having strong associations with the Roman Catholic Easter Sequence "Victimae Paschali Laudes," with which Luther would have been very familiar.
The concert is free and open to the public. Complimentary guaranteed seating passes can be obtained by calling 801-994-4663.
