Barbara Barlow Staker "Loving Mother"Comment on this story
Barbara was born March 13, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Alice Belva Welling and Israel Barlow III. After a valiant battle of lymphoma cancer, she passed away in the home of her daughter, Debbie, surrounded by her loving family. She was raised in the East Millcreek area and graduated from Granite High School where she was one of the first of two girls to be nominated to go to "Girls State" at Utah State University. Attended the University of Utah where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega AXO. Married Alma Jay Staker January 5, 1951 in Salt Lake City, Utah; solemnized December 21, 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple. Later divorced. She worked as a chartist at the University of Utah until she retired. She was very interested in politics and was often a voting judge in her community. As a faithful member of the LDS Church she served as president in the Relief Society, Young Women and Primary organizations and in numerous other leadership and teaching positions. For 63 years she cherished the friendship she had with 14 women who have all been friends since Jr. High, meeting once a month and are known as "The Club". She enjoyed playing her harmonica as a hobby and loved listening to classical music. The two most important elements of her life were her family and her church. She loved being a grandma to her grandchildren. She was a friend to all; she had a sweet friend, Janet, whom she met at work who lived with her for months before leaving on her mission. Mom was a wonderful listener and always made everyone laugh with her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. In the winter she loved going to visit her daughters, Jody and Shar in Mesquite, NV. We are eternally grateful to those who attended to her care, especially Hospice, for their kind and wonderful attention they gave to our mother. She is survived by her children: Karen (Jay) Young, Holladay, UT; Mark (Paula) Staker, Syracuse, UT; Jody (Shar) Staker, Mesquite, NV; Debbie (Craig) Worthington; Brad (Janet) Staker; Bobbi (Scott) Stillman, Draper, UT; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo Barlow.
