"Meet the Orchestra Through Great Musical Fables" is the theme for this weekend's concert by the newly renamed American West Symphony of Sandy (formerly the Orchestra of Sandy). "It will be an educational concert aimed at both children and their parents," said music director Joel Rosenberg. "It's part of the orchestra's new emphasis on outreach."

The program opens with one of Johannes Brahms' Hungarian Dances and includes the first movement from Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique" and the second and third movements from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's popular "Scheherazade," all of which use the orchestra imaginatively.

"The first movement of the Berlioz, 'Reveries and Passion,' paints a colorful picture of love," Rosenberg said. "It's autobiographical, and in this movement, Berlioz thinks about the women in his life. There are several themes that keep recurring." To help the audience understand the piece, Rosenberg will show the themes and discuss who they represent.

"Scheherazade" is without question Rimsky-Korsakov's best known work. It's based on the "One Thousand and One Nights" from Arabian lore and the Russian composer makes the most of his exotic setting. "It's fascinating music. The work is so famous because of its orchestral colors its Oriental flavor and its rhythmic vitality. And like the 'Symphony fantastique,' I'll illustrate the themes and tell the story before we play it."
