SANDY — Rural food producers selling to area restaurants will be featured at 5 p.m. Sunday as part of a "Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food" celebration at Fratelli Ristorante, 9236 Village Shop Drive.
"Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food" is a U.S. Department of Agriculture initiative to create economic opportunities by better connecting consumers with local producers. The initiative hopes to revitalize rural communities through agriculture.
USDA Rural Development offers a variety of programs to help rural producers, including grants and guaranteed loans. The agency also assists producers in bringing their goods to local markets and supports economic growth and development in rural areas.
"Purchasing locally grown and produced food saves energy, assures fresh quality and benefits Utah's economy," said David Conine, USDA Rural Development's director for Utah.
Among the rural producers to be featured Sunday are Stoneground Bakery, Mountain View Mushrooms, Shepherds Cheese, Drake Family Farms, Cox Honey, Creminelli, Beehive Cheese, Gilt Edge Flour Mills, Heber Valley Meats, Uinta Beer, Castle Creek Winery, Heritage Gardens, Mountain Valley Trout, Miller Meats and Martins Fine Desserts.
