Outlook: The Miners are the undisputed team to beat with nine returning offensive starters and nine returning defensive starters. Season opener: at Viewmont, Aug. 20.

2. Alta (10-3)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Bingham in 5A semifinals.

Outlook: Will count on four returning O-line starters to help it compete with rival Bingham. Season opener: at Cottonwood, Aug. 20.

3. Davis (10-3)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Bingham in 5A championship.

Outlook: Returns some quality defensive starters from last year's 5A runner-up team. Season opener: vs. Brighton, Aug. 20.

4. Timpview (11-2)

Class: 4A

2009 Playoffs: Beat Springville in 4A championship.

Outlook: With plenty of returning starters, T-Birds are favored to win a fifth straight 4A title. Season opener: at Pleasant Grove, Aug. 20.

5. Mountain Crest (10-2)

Class: 4A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Timpview in 4A semifinals.

Outlook: After three straight semifinal losses to Timpview, and now that Alex Kuresa is a senior, is this finally the year the Mustangs get over the hump with a title? Season opener: vs. Highland, Aug. 20.

6. Lone Peak (9-3)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Hunter in 5A quarterfinals.

Outlook: The Knights return plenty of contributors to be a factor in the difficult Region 4 race. Season opener: at Bountiful, Aug. 20.

7. Highland (8-4)

Class: 4A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Mountain Crest in 4A quarterfinals.

Outlook: Will be solid in the trenches, and features some talented skill position kids. Season opener: at Mountain Crest, Aug. 20.

8. Pleasant Grove (8-3)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Davis in 5A quarterfinals.

Outlook: Expectations aren't as high as last year, but Vikings will still be in the mix in Region 4. Season opener: vs. Timpview, Aug. 20.

9. Cottonwood (8-4)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Alta in 5A quarterfinals.

Outlook: With the tragic passing of first-year coach Teko Johnson, the Colts will be playing with heavy hearts all season long. Season opener: vs. Alta, Aug. 20.

10. Springville (11-2)

Class: 4A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Timpview in 4A championship.

Outlook: What does coach Scott Mitchell have for an encore with this program on the rise? Season opener: at Dixie, Aug. 20.

11. Bountiful (9-2)

Class: 4A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Bonneville in 4A first round.

Outlook: After last year's early playoff ouster, the Braves are young and inexperienced in 2010. Season opener: vs. Lone Peak, Aug. 20.

12. Spanish Fork (8-3)

Class: 4A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Timpview in 4A quarterfinals.

Outlook: Some excellent players are back, and the Dons can't be overlooked by anyone in 4A. Season opener: at Mountain View, Aug. 20.

13. Hunter (8-4)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Davis in 5A semifinals.

Outlook: The Wolverines are hoping to build off of last year's 5A semifinal appearance. Season opener: at Kearns, Aug. 20.

14. Fremont (5-5)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Alta in 5A first round.

Outlook: This young team has some experience and could be a sleeper in Region 1. Season opener: vs. Jordan, Aug. 20.

15. Syracuse (8-3)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Bingham in 5A quarterfinals.

Outlook: Has consistently proved the past two years that it's one of the best teams in Region 1. Season opener: at Copper Hills, Aug. 20.

16. Juan Diego (13-1)

Class: 3A

2009 Playoffs: Beat Hurricane in 3A championship.

Outlook: Most of last year's contributors are gone, but the team has reloaded and ready for a three-peat. Season opener: at West, Aug. 20.

17. Riverton (5-5)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Pleasant Grove in 5A first round.

Outlook: Has enough returning contributors to be a contender in Region 3 behind Bingham. Season opener: vs. Park City, Aug. 20.

18. Skyline (7-4)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Syracuse in 5A first round.

Outlook: With a big offensive line, and a very fast team, Eagles should be improved in 2010. Season opener: at Hurricane, Aug. 20.

19. Bonneville (7-5)

Class: 4A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Dixie in 4A quarterfinals.

Outlook: The Lakers will be strong defensively, and are hoping to challenge Mountain Crest in region. Season opener: vs. Layton, Aug. 20.

20. Brighton (6-4)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Did not qualify.

Outlook: With no returning starters defensively, the Bengals have a tough uphill climb this season. Season opener: at Davis, Aug. 20.

21. Hurricane (11-3)

Class: 3A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Juan Diego in 3A championship.

Outlook: Despite back-to-back title game losses, Tigers seem as determined as ever in 2010. Season opener: vs. Skyline, Aug. 20.

22. Woods Cross (7-4)

Class: 4A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Springville in 4A quarterfinals.

Outlook: Coach Fred Fernandes has turned this program around, and 'Cats will be a major player in 4A. Season opener: vs. Roy, Aug. 20.

23. Jordan (7-5)

Class: 5A

2009 Playoffs: Lost to Bingham in 5A first round.

Outlook: Always finds a way to compete in Region 1, but a third- or fourth-place finish is likely. Season opener: vs. Bingham, Aug. 20.
