The children in Lowell Elementary School read 2,253 books in seven weeks to earn sets of the World Book Encyclopedia or Childcraft for 19 classrooms.

In addition, 208 of the students won gold or silver medals and certificates. The encyclopedia publisher matched pledges the children earned through their marathon reading project, said Martha Frankovich, principal. Cindi Young, a PTA volunteer, and Ron Egbert, a World Book representative, encouraged the youngsters to meet their pre-set goals.
