Nucor Corp.'s first-quarter profit rose 8 percent despite soaring raw material costs, especially for scrap metal.

The steelmaker and scrap metal recycler, based in Charlotte, N.C., reported Thursday that its net income rose to $409.8 million, or $1.41 per share, for the three months ended March 29, compared with $381 million, or $1.26 per share, during the same period last year.

Revenue grew to $4.97 billion from $3.77 billion last year.

Nucor has a steel-joint plant and a cold-finish plant in Brigham City, as well as a bar mill in Plymouth.
