SANDY — A man died Wednesday evening after police say a coworker accidentally shot him in the stomach with a rifle.

The shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. in an apartment near 9200 S. Riverside Drive (700 West). The man and a female coworker were cleaning out the vacant apartment and removing items left inside, said Sandy police Sgt. Victor Quezada.

"She found two rifles underneath the bed," he said. "As she was carrying them out, one of the rifles discharged."

A 46-year-old man was shot once in the stomach, Quezada said. The man was taken to the University of Utah Hospital where he later died.

The woman was being interviewed by detectives Wednesday night, but police said they believe the shooting was accidental.
