WEST BOUNTIFUL — A West Bountiful woman got an unnerving surprise Tuesday after returning home from errands.

While unloading groceries, a man who police say had broken into her house while she was gone decided it was time to go.

"She heard some rustling, and then noticed someone running out her door," said West Bountiful Police Chief Randy Lloyd.

The incident began about 10:30 a.m. when the woman walked in her house, near 1100 West and 200 North.

The 25-year-old man left with several undisclosed items. The woman called 911, and officers who swarmed the area spotted a man matching the description of the burglar near 400 North and 900 West, Lloyd said.

The man tried to escape by running through a field. Items taken from the house were later found discarded in that field, he said.

The next time police saw him, he had somehow slipped unnoticed out of the field and tried to drive away in a relative's car, Lloyd said. Officers pulled the car over without further incident.

The suspect was being questioned Tuesday.
