POCATELLO (AP) — For months members of the Guzman family searched their old neighborhood, called Pocatello's local animal shelter and visited their former house, hoping to spot the missing family cat.

Meiko, a long-haired Siamese, had vanished after 5-year-old Neakis Guzman accidentally let him out the door. Neakis' mom, Fran Guzman, finally figured the cat had been hit by a car.

But on Wednesday — nearly a year later — the Guzman family got a nice surprise. Someone had recently dropped the cat off at an animal shelter and thanks to an identification microchip implanted in the cat's shoulder, shelter workers knew just who to call.

The Guzmans say they're thrilled and are keeping a close eye on Meiko from now on.
