President George W. Bush paid $221,635 in taxes this year on $719,274 in 2007 taxable income that included a $150,000 advance paid Laura Bush for the children's book she wrote with their daughter Jenna, according to figures released by the White House.

Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, paid $602,651 in federal taxes, including $136,486 paid today when they filed their returns, on $2.5 million in taxable income.

The president and first lady gave $165,660 to charity, 17.9 percent of their adjusted gross income, including contributions to the volunteer fire department in Crawford, Texas, where his ranch is located, the Malaria No More Fund, Martha's Table, St. John's Church and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The vice president and Mrs. Cheney donated $166,547, or 5.4 percent of their adjusted gross income, to charity in 2007.

The administration released the partial tax returns Friday, as they have done each year since Bush entered the White House in 2001. Presidents have regularly released tax returns since Jimmy Carter began the practice in 1977.
