CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — A New Mexico man accused of kidnapping and killing a 19-year-old Brigham Young University student has pleaded not guilty.

Joel Courtney sat next to a court-appointed attorney Wednesday in an appearance by video.

The 41-year-old was extradited Tuesday to Corvallis from New Mexico, where he had been sentenced in an unrelated rape and abduction case.

Brooke Wilberger was a BYU student who vanished in May 2004. Her body has not been found.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

They say Courtney will face new charges that he tried to kidnap and kill two other victims in Oregon.
