Utah Valley State center Robyn Fairbanks added another honor to her long list of accomplishments by earning an AP All-American honorable mention
The junior from Raymond, Alberta's 23.8 points per game was fourth-best in the country. Fairbanks' 57.9 percent field-goal percentage was the 12th-best and she was in the top 25 nationwide in rebounding with 9.7 boards per game.Fairbanks' other honors this year included being a unanimous selection as the 2007-08 Division I Independent Player of the Year. She was also the Independent Player of the Week five times and named to the first-team All-Independent squad.
SOFTBALL: UVSC and BYU scheduled a game last Tuesday on short notice.
With the game only announced to the public the morning of, the Cougars made the short trip to Orem and came away with 7-0 win.
Wolverines starter Ali Bramwell held BYU to three runs in her five innings of work. But the Cougars went on to score four runs in the seventh for a comfortable win.
On Wednesday, UVSC traveled to Utah State and dropped both games of a doubleheader.
The Wolverines got out to a four-run lead in the first game before letting the Aggies score nine unanswered runs in a 9-4 loss.UVSC didn't fare as well in the second game, losing 10-1 in a five-inning affair.
BASEBALL: UVSC split a four-game series against Utah last week.
The Wolverines took the first game at home 8-0 in which starter Marcus Moore tossed his third complete game of the season and first career shutout. UVSC also won 4-2 on Friday at Utah.Utah took the second game 4-3 on Thursday at home and the finale on Saturday in Orem 17-6.
TRACK AND FIELD: Four Wolverines placed first in the BYU Cougar Invitational last Friday.Sprinter Mariama Salifu won the 100- and 200-meter sprints. Ashley Timo won the high jump, Alise Lindsey placed first in the high jump, and Chase Englestead led the men with a win in the 1500 meter race.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Echo Thatcher was UVSC's best finisher at the BYU Dixie Classic in St. George last Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thatcher shot an 82 in the final round and finished tied for 48th.UVSC placed 11th in the team standings.
RUGBY: UVSC earned a spot in the USA Rugby Division II quarterfinals by beating Cal Maritime and Santa Clara at home in the Pacific Coast playoffs last weekend.
The Wolverines were down by 17 points to Cal Maritime before pulling through for a 34-22 win on Friday. UVSC scored 34 unanswered points.A 24-17 win over Santa Clara gave UVSC its first national postseason berth. UVSC goes on the face East Carolina in Albuquerque, N.M., on April 18.
