Two people charged with killing a 9-year-old boy by forcing him to stand in a tub of icy water as punishment have had trial dates set for Sept. 15-19 before 3rd District Judge Deno Himonas.

Pedro Gaucin-Canales, 36, who was a friend of the boy's family, and the boy's sister, Rebecca Hernandez-Velasco, 19, both are charged with first-degree felony murder for the hypothermia death of Josue Contreras-Velasco.

They also are charged with child abuse and obstruction of justice, both second-degree felonies.

The three were at the Melting Pot restaurant, where the two adults worked, early in the morning on July 22 when the incident occurred. The boy was punished by being placed naked in a trash container filled with icy water for approximately 45 minutes, investigators say.
