Last Friday night, after seeing the documentary film "Happy Valley" with my friend Suzy, I told her to tell her friends to see it. I told my husband, a pharmacist, he needed to see it as well. I don't claim to be an authority on addiction, but I have seen first-hand, within my own extended family, how tight its ugly grasp can be. Within our Sandy neighborhood, I have seen addiction tear families apart and ruin lives. And these families aren't composed of undereducated, poverty-ridden individuals.

I thoroughly enjoy living in Utah, yet I suspect we're on the verge of an epidemic — if we're not there already.
