OREM — After nearly two months of road games to start the season, Utah Valley State finally had its first baseball game at home last Wednesday.

The Wolverines looked good early on before allowing four runs in the fifth inning to give up their lead and losing 12-6 to Utah. It was UVSC's (4-17-1) sixth straight loss.

UVSC starter Marcus Moore (2-4), who beat the Utes three times last year, gave up six earned runs through 5 2/3 innings.

Kevin Arendse led the Wolverines' offense with a 2-for-5 night at the plate and three RBIs. Jace Brinkerhoff and Adam Openshaw added two hits apiece.

UVSC will play Southern Utah on Monday.

Brinkerhoff currently leads the team in hitting with a .349 batting average. He also leads the Wolverines in RBIs (20), doubles (8) and home runs (3). Kai Hatch (.314) and Josh Hinckley (.311) are also hitting better than .300.

Moore leads the team's starting pitchers in earned run average (4.03) and wins (2).

Former state MVP Andy Jangard is 0-1 with a 3.00 earned run average. Brinkerhoff made one pitching appearance, throwing one scoreless inning.

SOFTBALL: UVSC's three-game series scheduled for this past weekend against Utah was postponed due to the inclement weather that rolled through the state. Instead of the Wolverines hosting one game and then playing a doubleheader at Utah, UVSC will now host a doubleheader May 5. The single game is now scheduled to be played at Utah on Monday.

MEN'S GOLF: Nick Nelson finished third at the Cal Poly Intercollegiate last week. Nelson finished one shot shy of the winners.

Jeff Gibson was UVSC's other top-25 finisher, placing 23rd.

WRESTLING: Six UVSC wrestlers were honored for their academic achievements by the Western Wrestling Conference.

Sam Allen and Nate Kearsley made the All-Academic team. Casen Eldredge, Jeff Newby, Flint Ray and Zach Williams were named to the commissioner's honor roll.

A 3.20 grade point average and a sophomore standing were needed to qualify for the All-Academic squad, plus the wrestler had to be a starter or a key reserve. The honor roll required a wrestler to have a 3.0 GPA.
