Salt Lake gang detectives didn't have to go far early Thursday to catch a criminal.

While detectives were in the rear parking lot of the police station, near 300 South and 200 East, they heard a gunshot.

Investigators did not believe the shot was aimed at them, said Salt Lake police detective Jeff Bedard.

Still, officers drove to 135 S. 300 East and saw three people get into a car and flee. The car was stopped a few blocks away.

Ronald Whitelaw, a former Public Enemy No. 1, was inside the car and arrested for investigation of firing a gun within city limits and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

No injuries were reported, and officers could not find any structure or object that appeared to be hit.
