PROVO — A man was charged Friday with child-abuse homicide in the death of his girlfriend's 13-month-old baby.

Christopher Thunborg, 22, was arrested March 12, after he and his girlfriend, Whitney Pettersson, called police to report that the baby wasn't breathing.

Paramedics responded and rushed the baby to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

During an examination of the baby, doctors noticed suspicious bruising on the baby's stomach and back, and an autopsy revealed a lacerated stomach and subcranial bleeding.

When Orem police questioned Thunborg, he told them he had been watching the baby while Pettersson worked and had tripped and fallen on some toys while holding the baby. However, police say that story didn't match up with the bruises.

Thunborg now faces two felony charges — child-abuse homicide and obstruction of justice — in Provo's 4th District Court. He will be in court again April 11 in American Fork.

He is being held in the Utah County Jail on $100,000 cash-only bail.
