HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It took a late comeback, but fourth-ranked Salt Lake Community College survived the first round of the NJCAA championship tournament Tuesday morning.

The 30-3 Bruins rallied from an 11-point deficit with 6:30 remaining to defeat 28-5 Vincennes (Ind.) University 65-61 in the opening game of the tourney at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Sophomore Brian Green led the Bruins with 15 points, including the go-ahead-for-good bucket with 1:40 remaining. DaVell Jackson had seven of his 13 points during the rally, while Papa Samba Guisse poured in eight of his 10 down the stretch.

SLCC advances to the NJCAA's Elite Eight round. The Bruins will face the winner of today's first-round game between Paris (Texas) Junior College and Southeastern Illinois College.

Devon Dumes, who put Vincennes up 58-47 with a long 3-pointer at the 6:30 mark, led the Trailblazers with 21 points. The Indiana squad falls into the consolation bracket and will face the loser of the Paris-SE Illinois game on Wednesday.
