Utah's only Big Dancer
BYU is the lone team from the state to earn an NCAA tourney invitation this year. The Cougars are making their 23rd appearance and second consecutive. Utah leads the state with 26 appearances but hasn't gone since 2005. Utah State has been 17 times, Weber State 14 and Southern Utah once.
Tuesday's opening game
The Big Dance officially gets under way Tuesday with the opening-round game between Mount St. Mary's (18-14) and Coppin State (16-20) in Dayton, Ohio. Coppin State, which won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, is the first 20-loss team ever to participate in the tournament. Tuesday's winner will face top-seed North Carolina Friday.
Women still waiting
The 2008 NCAA women's tournament pairings will be announced today at 5 p.m. on ESPN. Utah (27-4) is expected to draw a good seed despite being upset by Colorado State in the Mountain West Conference tournament quarterfinals. The Utes are projected as a No. 4 by ESPN.com and forecasted to face Montana Saturday at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M.
