OREM — Utah Valley State College sophomore Christina Lowe, a history and political science major from Midway, was recently pronounced Miss Utah Valley University.

UVSC will officially become Utah Valley University on July 1.

Lowe beat out 14 other competitors in the pageant. She was asked a series of questions and sang "Time to Say Goodbye," by Sara Brightman. With her new crowning, Lowe promises to promote political process and encourage students to vote.

"In the next year I plan to hold rallies at UVU that feature keynote debates, promoting early voting," Lowe said. "I plan to visit elementary schools to sing patriotic songs and speak to kids about the importance of voting and politics. I'll also visit high schools and require 17-year-olds to register to vote, so by the time they're 18 they will be able to vote and not put it off because they didn't register."

Lowe's attendants were Stephanie Millard, of Orem; Libby Chatfield, of Alpine; and Katie Angerbauer of Bountiful.

For winning Miss UVU, Lowe received a $1,000 scholarship to UVU, a Bon Losee necklace, $100 credit to Bon Losee and $200 credit to the school bookstore. She will compete in the Miss Utah pageant later this year.
