• Since 1983, 19,500 refugees have settled in Utah. They have come from Southeast Asia, the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Cuba.

• In 2008, 850 refugees are expected to settle in Utah. They will come from Iraq, Iran, Cuba, Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), Burundi and other parts of Africa.

• Refugees seeking employment must present documentation such as Form I-94, an Employment Authorization Card, or a Social Security card and state identification.

• Advantages of hiring refugees include increasing workplace diversity and productivity.

• Employers can face fines if they discriminate against refugees in hiring based on race, language, religion, refugee status and other civil-rights criteria.
