• Since 1983, 19,500 refugees have settled in Utah. They have come from Southeast Asia, the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Cuba.
• In 2008, 850 refugees are expected to settle in Utah. They will come from Iraq, Iran, Cuba, Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), Burundi and other parts of Africa.
• Refugees seeking employment must present documentation such as Form I-94, an Employment Authorization Card, or a Social Security card and state identification.
• Advantages of hiring refugees include increasing workplace diversity and productivity.• Employers can face fines if they discriminate against refugees in hiring based on race, language, religion, refugee status and other civil-rights criteria.
