A mindful hotel guest who heard a loud bang about 8:30 p.m. Saturday helped management find a stabbing victim in the next room.
The guest and management found a man lying in the room with an 8-inch butcher knife sticking out of his chest, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Lamar Ewell. He was alone in the room.
The incident occurred at 247 S. State Street in the Cambridge Hotel, Ewell said. Police believe the victim rents an apartment next door and had been with a friend.
The victim was taken by ambulance in critical condition. He was undergoing emergency surgery Saturday night. Meanwhile, a message was sent to all local officers to be on the lookout for a 50-year-old white male with a pot belly. The man is a suspect in the stabbing, Ewell said.
