Kids in Utah County slam-dunked this year's reading contest sponsored by Scholastic Book Fairs and the Utah Jazz.

Eight of the 12 top schools in the ninth annual reading contest are in Utah County.

Utah Jazz players visited the 12 schools Tuesday to reward students for reading an average of 572 minutes each on their own. Winning schools also received an ice-cream party courtesy of Russell's Old Fashioned Ice Cream.

A total of 50,769 students in 79 schools participated this year. The students read 29,051,997 minutes over four weeks.

The top 12 elementary schools are: Meridian School (private), Provo; Middle Canyon, Tooele; Snow Springs, Lehi; Ridgeline, Highland; Cherry Hill, Orem; Mapleton, Mapleton; Pony Express, Eagle Mountain; Syracuse Arts Academy (charter), Syracuse; Northridge, Orem; Colby School, Park City; Timpanogos, Provo; and Grantsville, Grantsville.

The contest is open to all schools within a 50-mile radius of the EnergySolutions Arena.
