ST. GEORGE — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper and his wife were seriously injured in a multi-car pile-up.

Police said Danny Ferguson and his wife were driving on Riverside Drive about 7 p.m. Monday when a car being driven by an 82-year-old man veered into their lane and struck them. The car then bounced off theirs, and hit another car, which was also rear-ended.

"They had to be cut out of the car," St. George Police Sgt. Craig Harding said of the trooper and his wife. They were taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in serious condition but were expected to recover, police said.

The 82-year-old driver appeared to be suffering from some medical problems, Harding said. He was being investigated for possible drug and alcohol use, police said, but was not arrested. The accident will be referred to local prosecutors for any possible charges.
