CEDAR CITY (AP) — Ray Inkel is looking for the "the sourest-natured dog that lives."

The production manager for the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Inkel says that's the way the pet of the character "Launce" is described in "Two Gentlemen of Verona." The play will be among this summer's festival offerings.

To fill the part, Inkel held a canine casting call recently. About a dozen dogs and their owners pranced and preened in hopes of securing Inkel's favor.

Inkel took pictures of each dog and made note of how each responded to commands.

The chosen pup will appear in three scenes during the play.

The Tony Award-winning festival opens June 15. Performances run through October.
