Police say a woman was carjacked in a Smith's parking lot, forced to drive across the valley and get money out of her bank account.

The Thursday afternoon incident began when a 27-year-old woman in the parking lot of Smith's Marketplace, 455 S. 500 East, was approached by a man with a broken glass bottle and ordered her to get back in her car, said Salt Lake police detective Jeff Bedard.

The woman drove while the man sat in the back seat and ordered her to go to an ATM near 9000 S. State, Bedard said. The woman believed the carjacker had a gun, he said.

At the ATM, the woman withdrew money and gave it to him. For an unknown reason, the man then became "spooked," got out of the car and ran, Bedard said.

The woman drove off and called police. After she gave a description to police, a nearby Sandy officer spotted a suspect near the TRAX station at 9000 South, Bedard said. The shaken woman was found by police in West Jordan.

Brandon Gibbons, 24, was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and several warrants.
