The way to produce electricity is from coal gasification — "mine mouth" plants. These plants process the gas produced from burning coal in a closed system, similar to a petroleum refinery. The solid waste (slag) is placed back into the mine, the fly ash is used in producing cement, the solid chemicals are used by industry and the waste heat and off gas is used in greenhouses to produce food.

There will be no need to transport coal by rail or truck. Customers within 1,000 miles of the coal mine can be served by using the present electrical transmission lines. Also, electricity produced — without pollution — at the Utah mines will be available to customers throughout most of the 11 Western states.
