A text message first thought to be part of an identity theft scam turned out to be a teen hoax, officials said.

Media outlets began reporting about the possible scam Saturday after a Salt Lake man received a text message asking for personal information from someone impersonating a Utah Highway Patrol trooper.

Sunday, investigators said they had solved the case.

"It was just a prank by two 14-year-olds," said agent Cori Start of the Utah Highway Patrol.

It is now up to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office to decide if the culprits will face any criminal charges.
