A former Riverton public works employee facing charges of trying to arrange a sexual rendezvous with an underage child over the Internet has struck a plea deal with prosecutors.

Court records said Thomas Brent Varney, 50, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, a second-degree felony, and dealing in harmful material to a minor, a class A misdemeanor, during an appearance in Salt Lake City's 3rd District Court on Feb. 7.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 7.

Varney was arrested twice last year in connection with a pair of sting operations by the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
