R. Milton Yorgason, 96, former state senator, state tax commissioner and Salt Lake County assessor, died on Wednesday.

He began his career as a tax accountant in Ogden before moving to Salt Lake City, where he worked for nine years — from 1969 to 1978 — on the Utah State Tax Commission. He also served two terms as Salt Lake County assessor, 1979-86.

He received the "Utah Property Tax Administrator of the Year" award in 1977. He had attended Weber County schools and Weber College. He was born in Farr West, Weber County.

Mr. Yorgason had also been a state senator from Weber County's District 13, from 1967-69

A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had been president of the Ben Lomond South Stake. He had also served as bishop of the Ogden 29th Ward, and he and his wife served a mission at the Mesa, Ariz., Temple. He had served a mission to Sweden and also held various callings in the Hillside Stake of Salt Lake City.

Services will be today at noon in the Ensign Peak Ward Chapel, 125 E. North Sandrun Road. Friends may call from 10:45-11:45 a.m., prior to services.
