Rep. Glenn Donnelson, R-North Ogden, defended HB241 as "compassionate" in a Deseret Morning News story Friday. Donnelson said, "We can still be compassionate and enforce the law. I don't know if we're compassionate if we ignore the law and keep digging a hole for them."

What's compassionate about denying education to young people considered illegals because of the choices of their parents?

These young people are embracing the American view that education improves one's circumstance. Yet Donnelson says embracing this American value is "digging a hole for them."

How about an alternative that isn't punitive but provides a path to citizenship for those embracing the American ideal of education? Let's become a leader in legislating practical paths to citizenship.
