The old question was, "What effect will Mormonism have on Romney's candidacy?" The new question is, "What effect will Romney's failed candidacy have on Mormonism?"

Mitt Romney now represents, for millions of Americans, what a Mormon leader looks like. Unfortunately, he is seen everywhere outside Utah as a "flip-flopper." Through his campaign, Romney has projected an incorrect image of Mormons and Mormon leaders as opportunistic and dishonest.

Americans expect politicians who profess strong religious faith to be honest and forthright. For other politicians, the expectation is to at least appear honest. Romney is probably, at heart, an honest, compassionate and thoughtful person. Next time, he simply needs to be himself and tell his handlers to take a walk when they suggest things that are less than completely forthright.
