SPRINGVILLE — The Timpview girls basketball team had the Region 7 championship locked up more than a week ago, but it wasn't about to cash it in on the rest of the regular season.

The T-Birds finished off a clean sweep of the region with a 49-36 win over Springville on Thursday, closing out the year with a 12-0 league record and all the momentum going into the state tournament.

Instead of relaxing and resting for the last week, Timpview put all its energy into winning its remaining games. T-Birds coach Kawika Akina also thinks keeping his team up for every game will make them better prepared for the playoffs when one loss means the end of the season.

"We wanted to win the region, but we also wanted to win every game in the region and go undefeated," said Akina. "That was a motivating factor for them in playing hard for the whole 12 games. I think they've done a pretty good job of that. Now it's about the next game. You lose and you go home."

Springville already had its place in the playoffs secured, but was fighting for seeding. The Red Devils actually led for most of the game, although never by more than one or two possessions.

It wasn't until the fourth quarter when Timpview went on a big run to pull away by double digits.

Ashley Kroneberger led Springville with 13 points. Her teammates Lexi Eaton and Genna Brown added 10 points apiece, but only one other player made the score sheet for the Red Devils. That wasn't enough to keep pace when Timpview's offense kicked into gear in the final period.

Trailing by one point at 34-33 with less than seven minutes left, the T-Birds closed out the game on a 16-2 run. Alexis Kaufusi had nine of her game-high 23 points during the stretch while Springville couldn't get a shot to fall.

"It took us three quarters to finally catch up to them and actually start playing the way we play," said Akina. "We stayed in front of them more. We started trying to take charges. We didn't give them easy baskets like we were in the first half. We were getting back faster."

Gabrielle Pinegar had nine points to go along with Kaufusi's total. All of them came on 3-point shots, while forward Chelsea Bridgewater added eight.

Timpview will play Bonneville on Tuesday at in the first round of the playoffs. Springville slipped to the fourth seed with the loss and will face Mountain Crest.
