I ran into an old friend the other day. He looked sad. When I asked what was wrong, he told me he had lost his home to foreclosure, not because of a bad subprime loan, but because he had lost his job. He is a skilled brick mason of more than 20 years, but now, Mexican immigrants willing to work for less than half the pay my friend was earning have invaded his craft.

Maybe this story will give some balance to the Deseret Morning News' constant drumbeat that the flood of immigrants into our country is good for us by providing a work force willing to take jobs no self-respecting American will take.

My friend's sad predicament provides a shameful example to the contrary.
