Two people have been charged in connection with the shooting death of a man at a party near the University of Utah last weekend.

Robert Ramirez, 26, died early Sunday morning after being shot in the back outside a duplex at 369 S. 1300 East.

According to charges filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court, Michael Anthony Rix pulled the trigger.

When a fight broke out near the duplex, Rix, a 22-year-old Taylorsville man with prior convictions for criminal mischief and simple assault, saw Ramirez wrestling with another man and "fired (a shot) into the air while asking what was going on," according to the charging documents.

As Ramirez began walking back into the duplex, another fight broke out. Rix "hit Mr. Ramirez several times, and then shot him in the back," according to the charges.

After serving search warrants at two locations Sunday, police arrested four people in connection with the shooting.

Rix faces charges of first-degree felony homicide and third-degree felony for firing a gun near a highway.

Theophales Othew Kur, 20, was also arrested Sunday. He faces a third-degree felony charge of possession of a firearm by a restricted person. Kur, who had prior theft and burglary charges, was seen handing Rix the gun used in the shooting, according to court documents.

Two other men were arrested shortly after the homicide: Stany Mputu, 19, and Benjamin Calbert, 20. Salt Lake District Attorney's spokesman Nate Bryan said charges were filed against the individuals based on the evidence. If additional evidence comes up later, there is always the possiblity of filing more charges, he said.

As of noon Thursday, Calbert remained in the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of homicide, aggravated burglary and numerous warrants. Likewise, Mputu remained in jail as of noon Thursday for investigation of homicide and several outstanding warrants.
