Four elite sculptors will tackle 300-pound, 40-inch-high blocks of ice tooled with anything from chainsaws to fine chisels in a competition to determine who is the Ultimate Ice Carver at Zermatt Resort and Spa's Masters Ice Carvers Exhibition and Tournament as part of Heber Valley's Winterfest celebration Feb. 22-23.
Winterfest is an areawide celebration commemorating Heber Valley's Olympic legacy and a showcase for the area's winter activities. Just minutes from Zermatt Resort, the Swiss-themed Midway Town Square will also be celebrating Heber Valley's Winterfest throughout the weekend with "Free on Snow and Ice" competitions, bands and fireworks.
Head-to-head competition will begin at 6 p.m. Friday as carvers transform two ice blocks into magnificent sculptures within a one-hour time limit. On Saturday, each carver takes on four blocks within two hours beginning at 10 and 11 a.m. Judges will award points to determine who will compete in Saturday's 2 p.m. semi-finals and 3 p.m. finals.
