The Deseret Morning News and the Marshall Gates Foundation are teaming up to stage what they hope will become a premier annual event for high school baseball players.
The inaugural Marshall Gates Foundation/Deseret Morning News All-Star Game will be played on May 27 at Gates Field.
A total of 30 high school baseball players will be invited to play in the game. They will be selected based on how well they perform in the 2008 season, and there will be no restrictions based on their ages, classifications or where they attend school.
The players will be chosen by Chad Shepherd, who serves on the board of directors at the Marshall Gates Foundation, and Deseret Morning News staff members.
Teams will be split up as evenly as possible. Batting practice and a home run derby will take place prior to the nine-inning all-star contest.
A small fee will be charged to spectators to attend the game. All proceeds from the contest will go to the Marshall Gates Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is "to promote amateur sports competition through development and training of young amateur athletes for national and/or international competition in baseball."
