OREM — Utah County commuters can expect minimal delays along I-15 this week as the Utah Department of Transportation installs ramp meters.

The goal of the meters is to relieve congestion along the interstate and keep traffic flowing during rush hour.

"During the morning and afternoon commute, groups of vehicles attempt to access I-15 at the same time, which slows down traffic," said John Higgins, UDOT project manager. "Ramp meters regulate how frequently vehicles access I-15 by creating gaps, which allow motorists to merge safely without creating additional travel delays."

Construction crews began utility work Monday for the first meter at the northbound on-ramp at University Parkway.

In the coming weeks, ramp meters will be installed at each northbound ramp between University Parkway and the I-15 exchange at state Route 92 in north Lehi.

Crews will work on the $3 million project Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. The project is planned to be completed in May.
