SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police Tuesday were looking for three people who broke into an apartment, duct-taped a woman and then took her car.

The incident happened just before 9 a.m. at 3440 S. 500 East. A woman heard a knock at the door and didn't see anyone through the peephole, said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller. When she opened the door three men wearing masks, one armed with a handgun, forced their way inside.

The woman was bound with duct tape but otherwise unharmed, Keller said.

"(The intruders) ransacked the apartment looking for a specific, unknown item," he said. "This does not appear to be a random act. The suspects knew the residents."

It was unknown Tuesday if the men found what they were looking for. When they were done, they took the woman's keys and her vehicle. After the trio left, the woman was able to free herself and call police.

Investigators were looking for a white four-door 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer with Utah license plate 854 PCN. Anyone with information can call police at 840-4000.
