PROVO — Jeff Thacher is a mouth drummer.

The vocal percussionist with Rockapella is performing with the other four members of the a cappella group.

The other four are Scott Leonard, Kevin Wright, George Baldi and John K. Brown. Vocal Point, BYU's male a cappella group formed at Brigham Young University, opens for the quintette at their 8 p.m. show on Feb. 15. Promoter Sam Schultz's group, For Real, opens the 5:30 p.m. show.

Organized in the late 1980s, Rockapella has released more than 20 domestic and international albums, including the most recent concert album, "Live in Japan."

Rockapella's worldwide touring has created a following that has spawned an a cappella movement of new groups everywhere, especially in the Orient, Schultz said. The group was featured on the television game show "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" They recorded the theme song.

Rockapella added the Utah date to its international tour between stops in New York City and Germany.

Originally a quartet formed of Brown University alumni, they began performing on New York City street corners, with a hat at their feet. Literally singing for their supper, business cards dropped into the hat led to private parties and club appearances.

Realizing they were becoming more sophisticated and wanting a fuller sound, the quartet held auditions for a vocal percussionist.

They picked Thacher with his drum-like oral talents.
